Magnificent ruin

March 1, 2018

‘This palace is still impressive even though it has been stripped of all its decorations’, says art historian Anissa Foukalne surrounded by our students in the magnificent ruin called Badi Palace. She has just explained how Ahmed Al Mansour spent more than two decades building this palace called ‘The Incomparable’, for it to be looted by the next sultan just 75 years later.
Since the last exams and re-examinations of the first semester have past, it was finally time to make that art history tour through the medina of Marrakech, that Anissa Foukalne had promised us. On Friday, because visiting monuments is free for locals that day, our girls were all over the medina. And as tradition has dictated for centuries, we had couscous for lunch.
